Mendelssohn in St Paul's Cathedral, 120th Birthday concert
Michael Woods and the Chamber Orchestra at St Paul's once again joined Dr June Nixon and the Choir and organists of the Cathedral to continue the celebration of the Choir's 120th year. The orchestra gave brilliant, spirited performances of Mendelssohn's Hebrides overture and Symphony no. 5 in D major (Reformation).
Compositions and settings of the Cathedral's Organists/Choral Directors were also presented - from Dr A.E. Floyd right up to the current Director, internationally-recognised, Dr June Nixon. English choral/orchestral works of Stanford and Vaughan Williams were also performed.
The Dean of the Cathedral highlighted the achievements of the Choir and the international recognition that it has gained. Overall, it was a wonderful evening of celebration in a beautiful place.
We once again congratulate June Nixon on the publication of her setting of The Holly and the Ivy, which was performed and broadcast at Christmas on BBC radio and television by the Choir of Kings College, Cambridge.
